How can I be sure to get the best possible images at my appointment?

Being hydrated is the SINGLE MOST important thing you can do to improve the quality of your ultrasound images! If you want to see the best pictures you can, having plenty of clear amniotic fluid around your baby is the key. Drinking extra water will increase the quality and clarity of your amniotic fluid which is the "window" to view your baby. The clearer the "window", the clearer the pictures. It can take days for the water you drink to turn into amniotic fluid. Please be sure to drink extra water several days before your scan with us. There are other factors that could reduce the clarity of your baby's pictures such as placenta position, baby's position and mom's body size. But, having a good amount of clear amniotic fluid ranks number one for getting the best pictures.

What if my baby is being camera shy?

In rare cases we may offer to repeat your ultrasound free of charge. This will be done only at the discretion of the Sonographer. Only ONE rescan will be offered. We do NOT offer rescans for any reasons other than the following:

  • We are unable to get any portion of your baby's face during your paid session.
  • We are unable to determine gender during a paid gender session.

Can I come in for a scan if I am over 36 weeks?

When you are over 36 weeks the baby is big and sometimes is position for delivery. This makes it difficult to see the baby well. But, it's not impossible. If you have good fluid we can get nice pictures up until the end of your pregnancy.

When should I come in for a 3D/4D ultrasound?

That depends on what you want to see. Here are some examples of what we can see throughout the different weeks of your pregnancy:

    • 9-13 weeks: Your little one is pretty small at this stage usually measuring just a few inches in length. At this time, we can see baby’s arms, legs, body, head and the heartbeat.
    • 13-22 weeks: If you want to know the gender, now is your time. At 13 weeks the gender is about 98 % accurate and at 14 weeks about 99%. But remember that ultrasound can never be 100% certain. During this time, we can get a picture of your whole baby in one shot. The facial features are not well defined yet so the 3D/4D images now are not as good. Having some fluid in your bladder is helpful for gender determination.
    • 23-25weeks: Facial features are becoming more defined. We can still see most of your baby in one image.
    • 26-32 weeks: This is the best time for a 3D/4D session. Your baby’s facial features are well defined. Baby is bigger now, so we are not able to see the whole baby in one image anymore. Ideal images depend on baby’s position, the amount of amniotic fluid and the mother’s size. Increasing the amount of fluid you drink for a few days before this scan can help increase the amount of fluid around the baby and help us to get better images.
    • 33-36 weeks: We can still get some good pictures at this time; however, baby’s do tend to turn and look at mom’s back or have arms, hands or even feet in front of their faces now.
    • 37+ weeks: At this point, your baby is head down and usually looking at your back. It’s generally a tight space in there and it can be hard to get a good picture of the face now. It’s not impossible, if your baby happens to look up and there is nothing in front of the face, we can get a good image. But this would not be the recommended time as it can be hit and miss.

What is the difference between a 3D and 4D and HD ultrasound?

3D is a still image. 4D is 3D with live movement. HD is high definition. An HD ultrasound gives an extra dimension with a skin colored tint and the ability to direct light around the image to bring out a more life-like image.

Is the 3D/4D/HD ultrasound covered by insurance?

Insurance does not cover our ultrasounds. This is an elective ultrasound and is not intended to be a replacement for a prescribed ultrasound by your doctor. We accept cash, Visa, MasterCard, and debit cards.

    What is an elective ultrasound?

An elective ultrasound gives you an opportunity to provide a positive bonding experience with your baby for the mother, father and family members. This ultrasound gives you a chance to see your baby’s features and get a peek what he or she is doing in there. An elective ultrasound does not assess your baby for any abnormalities. A routine ultrasound should have already been performed to assess your baby for any anomalies.

Will my doctor be contacted about my elective ultrasound?

We do not contact your doctor. If we do see something that causes concern during your ultrasound, we will contact your doctor. We do require that you are receiving prenatal care. This session is not to be used in place of a diagnostic ultrasound.
